Systematic review of iodine supplementation in pregnancy

A research team from the University of Surrey, including Professor Margaret Rayman and Dr Sarah Bath from the UK Iodine Group have published a systematic review and meta-analysis of iodine supplementation in pregnancy. This review, led by Mariana Dineva, examines the effect of iodine supplements in pregnancy on maternal and infant thyroid fucntion, as well as offspring neurodevelopment.

The study concludes that further research is needed, especially well-conducted trials of iodine supplementation in moderate deficient pregnant women with outcomes that include child cognition and behaviour.

The review was published in April 2020 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and was accompanied by an editorial by Professor Michael Zimmermann.
